Madagascar is one of the best destinations in the world for wildlife watching. The name “lemurs” comes from the Latin lemures, shadow spirits. And it is precisely these spirits of the forest that we bring to life on this trip! Covered in misty jungles and thorny savannahs, Madagascar is home to a strange and wonderful biodiversity – a paradise waiting to be rediscovered. The vastness of the dense treetops and the lush foliage of the world’s oldest and most revered rainforests and spiny forests allow the hiker to experience Mother Nature in all her glory.
On this photo trip to the deep south and the east coast of Madagascar, you will experience the spirits of the forest! We discover the dancing Verreaux’ sifakas in the hot south of the island as well as the whimsical Aye Ayes, the singing indri or the mascots of Madagascar, the ring-tailed lemurs. Come with us and experience the trip of a lifetime!
Antananarivo – Fort Dauphin – Berenty
Welcome to the highlands of Madagascar! You arrive in Antananarivo, the capital, by plane. The next day, you will take a domestic flight to the south of the island. Via the beautiful coastal town of Fort Dauphin, you continue to the protected area of Berenty. In this dry forest with its red soil, you will see many lemurs up close, including the dancing sifakas and the ring-tailed lemurs. But also birds, the harmless Dumeril’s boa and chameleon will make your camera’s memory cards glow.
Berenty – Tolagnaro – Nahampoana
In Tolagnaro we spend two nights on the picturesque Indian Ocean coast, where there are great opportunities for star photography. We visit a small reserve not far from Fort Dauphin to see endangered sifakas, sportive lemurs and other animals. Nahampoana is hardly visited and therefore still an insider tip among travellers in Madagascar.
Tolagnaro – Antananarivo – Andasibe
By plane we return to Antananarivo. Early the next morning we drive east to the rainforests of Andasibe. These forests are known for their singing lemurs, the indris, and the rare diademed sifakas. Our bungalows overlook the rainforest, where we will see a variety of chameleons, frogs, the blue coua and curious brown lemurs over the next few days.
Andasibe – Akanin’ny Nofy
We travel by boat along the famous Canal de Pangalanes. In the small, private reserve Akanin’ny Nofy, a multitude of lemurs cavort. For a few days, we explore the area and photograph the local fishermen on their dangerous early morning ride in the surf of the Indian Ocean. We visit the unique Aye-Aye here on a post excursion. The “Nest of Dreams” spoils us with delicious food and you can relax before heading back to the capital.
Akanin’ny Nofy – Andasibe – Antananarivo
Today it is time to say goodbye to the nest of dreams. We spend the night in Andasibe before heading back to Tana. Once in Tana, we can stock up on spices and souvenirs at the artisan market. After a last dinner and a last beer, we head to the airport. We say goodbye – and maybe see you next time!
