For the first time, in 2018 we offer an expedition which focuses on an especial species: The Parson’s chameleon (Calumma parsonii). These gentle giants belong to the most impressive animals of Madagascar, and to the largest chameleons worldwide. We will document color variations, measure egg laying place temperatures and sun bath places, record weights and snout vent lengths – and of cause, we got Parson’s breeders on board. If you like to join this amazing expedition, we would be glad to welcome you in our team!
Of course, we will discover many other reptiles and amphibians besides Parson’s, among them a huge amount of chameleons, leaf-tailed geckos and frogs. Another highlight is meeting lemurs such as the Indri and the Aye-Aye face to face. Generally, we have a long list of great photo motives. If you like to experience Madagascar’s most beautiful sides and love chameleons, this is the travel of your dreams!
Antananarivo – Ambositra
After arriving in Madagascar’s capital, we have one day to relax. The following day we drive about 280 kilometers to the city of woodcarving. We will have lunch in Antsirabe. On the way we have enough time to look for chameleons and take pictures. In the afternoon, we arrive in Ambositra.
In the next morning we visit woodcarvers’ workshops before getting back on the road to the rainforests. In the late afternoon we reach Ranomafana. The next two days we will do two day and one night excursion to have a close look at the chameleon diversity here. Our program includes – among others – Furcifer balteatus, Calumma glawi, Calumma crypticum, Calumma oushaughnessyi, Calumma p. parsonii (yellow lip) and Palleon nasus.
Ranomafana – Antsirabe – Andasibe
After these exciting days in Ranomafana, we head back to the capital. We stay one night in one of the largest cities of the highlands, Antsirabe, which is also known for its gem stones. The following day, our travel leads us through the lush green rice fields to the rainforests of Andasibe.
The mountain fog forests of Andasibe belong to those with highest species diversity on Earth. We will do various day and night expeditions in Analamazaotra, Mitsinjo, V.O.I.M.M.A and Vohimana, to disover every frog, gecko and chameleon. Concerning the latter, we can see Calumma parsonii cristifer, Calumma brevicorne, Calumma p. parsonii (yellow giant), Calumma gastrotaenia, Calumma gallus, Furcifer wilsii and Furcifer bifidus.
Andasibe – Akanin’ny nofy
By boat we drive along Canal des Pangalanes until a private nature reserve which offers a paradisiac place to be for the next days. This area is where the distribution area of Calumma p. parsonii orange eye begins. But this lowland forest is also home to panther chameleons and a of other reptiles and lemurs. There is also time to simply lean back with a cocktail in your hand and the feet in the lake. Our gorgeous highlight here will be a night trip to visit the Aye-Aye.
Ankanin’ny Nofy – Mahambo
Our travel brings us by boat to the largest coastal city of Madagascar, Toamasina (Tamatave). Here we enter our SUVs and drive in northern direction to Mahambo. We enjoy the evening at the beach of the Indian Ocean. From Mahambo we do excursions to the forests around in order to find Calumma parsonii parsonii . We want to find out whether the colour variation here is similar to “orange eyes” or whether it’s a new one.
Mahambo – Antananarivo
Finally, we take the road back to the capital with our 4×4. Since the distance is long, we will stay one night in Andasibe before heading back to Antananarivo. Arriving in Tana we will visit the handcrafts’ market and get some spices and souvenirs. Only one more night, then this great adventure ends and it’s time to go back home.
