This is not a tour for sissies! During this tour, you spend more than 300 km driving by 4×4 apart from paved roads on dusty slopes to see the legendary lake Alaotra. On this biggest lake of Madagascar, you will begin to search by wooden boat for the extremly rare alaotra bamboo lemur, which lives only here in the riverside’s reeds. In Zahamena national park, we camp in the wilderness, and you don’t get “back to civilization” before reaching Andasibe, where your adventure ends relaxingly.
Ambatondrazaka – Antanandava – Ankosy
With your first day of the travel, you directly start into pure adventure: Until Moramanga, the road is in good condition yet, but then the road leads you to a sandy slope. 160 km off road are waiting for you to reach your destination! Due to the outlying location of Ambotandrazaka and other villages, we will sleep in very simple rooms. From Ambotandrazaka, we start by 4×4 again in the early morning to go another 70 km offroad to Antanandava.
After a night in a very simple hotel or a tent, the travel leads you to Zahamena national park. A little hike brings you to the campground right in the middle of untouched, fascinating nature. During the next days, you will discover the amazing rainforest: Visit a 80 m high waterfall, where you camp for a night nearby, and meet the Indris, the largest of Madagascar’s lemurs.
Our next travel destination is the famous largest lake of the country, Lake Alaotra. The riversides of this secretive water aren’t only home to the rarest duck of the Earth, of which eight individuals were seen lastly, but also offer the last refuge for the alaotra bamboo lemur. By wooden pirogue, you drive into the reed areas and watch this extremely rare small lemur. Back in the hotel, we find beds and warm water – what a blessing after all these adventures!
Ambatondrazaka – Andasibe
We drive back in direction of civilisation, and that means 160 km over holey roads, dusty slopes and surely one or the other surprise on the way. In the afternoon, we reach bitumenized roads, and after further 25 km, you find yourself in Andasibe, where you got a very nice hotel. During the next days, we will visit the diademed sifakas and Indris of Analamazaotra. At night, we go for a walk in the rainforest of a small, communally led park.
Slowely it’s time to say goodbye. Depending on how much time we needed for our offroad adventure, we eventually have time now left to visit the royal hill of Ambohimanga. In each case, you will have time to visit the traditional handcrafts’ market in the capital Antananrivo, before driving to the airport and flying back home.
