Madagascar’s amphibians and reptiles are unique, more than 90% of them occur nowhere else on Earth. This travel in spring 2024 is dedicated to the scaled animals of the eighth continent, but we will also watch lemurs and birds. This extraordinary travel focuses on Madagascar’s north, and as a special highlight, we integrated some islands into our program.
Among our photo motives, there will be the smallest chameleon on Earth and many different colour morphs of the panther chameleon. Additionally, we will learn to know the dry forests, rainforests, sandy beaches of dreams and Tsingys, and meet a variety of landscapes, tribes and animals. This travel is also suitable for non-photographers because the group will be separated into smaller ones in each national park.
Antananarivo – Ankarafantsika
Through the northern highland we drive to Ankarafantsika national park. In this dry forest, you can find the rare Furcifer rhinoceratos. The females of this species are purple and orange coloured! The landscape here is quite amazing and offers one of our tour highlights in Ambalabongo canyon.
Ambanja – Ankify
After a long drive we arrive at the small town Antsohihy to stay one night. When the sun’s high above us the next day, we stop by at Ankaramibe, where the distribution area of panther chameleons starts. The colourful different localities of Djangoa and Ambanja are well known among herpetologists. In the late afternoon, we arrive in the idyllic village of Ankify right at the sea, from where we will start our boat trips.
Nosy Faly – Nosy Tanikely
We travel to the fisher island of Nosy Faly to look for panther chameleons and other reptiles. One day later, we visit the paradisic island of Nosy Tanikely to snorkel with sea turtles and gaze at the marvellous coral reef. If you’d like to relax under palm trees on the white sand beach or in the warm sea, you’ll have the opportunity to do so in Ankify, too.
Ambilobe – Ankarana
We drive on along the distribution area of the panther chameleons and pass Ambanja as well as Ambilobe. Everytime we see an interesting point to get a closer look to, we stop the cars and look for chameleons. From Ambilobe we do excursions to the Tsingys d’Ankarana (needle stone massives) and to the street between Ambilobe and Sirama. Especially the last one is world famous for its amazing colourful pantherchameleons.
Tsingy rouge – Montagne d’Ambre
Our 4x4s bring us to Amber Mountain. A short journey leads us to the Tsingy rouge, a unique sandstone formation, which is a perfect landscape motive. Then we arrive Amber Mountain and its amazing, unbelievable rainforests. Our tents stay in the middle of the rainforest and we got the next days to enjoy all the various animals. We hope to find Furcifer timoni and the similar looking Furcifer petteri – and of cause, many other gorgeous creatures.
Nosy Hara
From Amber Mountain we go by boat to the small island of Nosy Hara. Recently – in 2012 – the smallest reptile worldwide was discovered here, and we hope to have one of these rare lizards in front of our lens, too. This island is really rarely visited and we’re proud to be the first tour operator to travel there.
Diego Suarez – Ramena
Ramena is our last destination of this travel: A small coastal town, where we recover from this adventure trip and think about everything we experienced and what happened. After some days at the pool, we fly from Diego Suarez (Antsiranana) back to the capital Tana, and finally back home to Europe.
Basic price per person in double rooms 3450,- €
Single-room supplement 600,- €
International and domestic flights are not included in travel price.
You need a domestic flight from Diego Suarez to Antananarivo for this travel. We would be glad to help you book this flight.
