This photo and theme travel is dedicated to the most colorful reptiles in the world. Mountain cloud forests and dry forests are among the most remarkable landscapes. Of course, we will also see some extremely rare varieties of lemurs and birds. This extraordinary tour leads us through coniferous forests, past dry stone mountains, and into the rain forest. This trip not only offers photo and reptile enthusiasts an exceptional travel experience. It is also suitable for anyone with an interest in the largely endemic fauna and flora, as well as the unique culture of Madagascar.
Andasibe
After arriving in the capital of Antananarivo, the trip goes eastbound to the mountain cloud forests of Andasibe and Vohimana. There are many interesting chameleons e.g. Calumma parsonii, Calumma parsonii cristifer, Calumma gallus, or nasutum. Besides many marvelous reptiles, you can also see the largest lemur of the Earth, the Indri.
Ankarafantsika
We go through the beautiful northern highlands to the national park of Ankarafantsika. In this dry forest, the rare Furcifer rhinoceratus can be found. The females of this species are purple in color, the bizarre nasal appendage of the male inspired the name of this chameleon. The landscape here is extremely attractive and the Ambalabongo canyon is a photographic highlight of this tour.
Ankaramibe – Djangoa – Ankify – Nosy Tanikely
A long drive of approximately eight hours will take us to Antsohihy. The next morning, the research starts in the habitat of the panther chameleon. The cities Ankaramybe, Djangoa, and Ambanja are well known among reptile enthusiasts! This travel stage ends in the idyllic village Ankify. From here we will also visit the island Nosy Tanikely, where we can explore the amazing coral gardens and snorkel with friendly sea turtles.
Ambilobe – Ankarana
From Ankify we will go to Ambilobe. This is home to one of the most popular color variations of the panther chameleon. Along the road to Sirama we will get to see many different colored specimens. After this excursion, we will go into the needle rock massif of Ankarana. Again, we will get to see rare reptiles including leaf-tailed geckos.
Tsingy rouge – Amber mountain
An absolutely extraordinary place is Amber mountain. In these mysterious mountain cloud forests, we hope to find the recently described Furcifer timoni and the similar looking Furcifer petteri. This forest is also home to many other amazing chameleons and to the largest of all leaf-tailed geckos. And you will camp right in the middle of the rainforest!
Diego Suarez – Ramena
Finally, our route takes us past Diego Suarez (Antsiranana) to the town of Ramena. Here we can relax a bit after this exciting tour before returning to the capital and finally home.
